TENNESSEE FIRST MODEL FOR EDUCATION
MISSION STATEMENT
The educational issues of Basil Marceaux have been formulated in conjunction with Dr. Barbara Jones-Glaze, an educator, student, and teacher advocate who holds the belief that all children deserve a free and
5 appropriate education with their natural talents and gifts being fully developed in the educational process.
EDUCATIONAL BELIEFS OF BASIL MARCEAUX
Our children are our most prized possessions. I believe that schools should be safe, clean, and efficient. We send our children to school to learn to become contributing and productive members of our community. It is our hope that our children will be happy and successful in school. My major educational issues will revolve around a child-centered educational experience for our citizens in the Tennessee First Model for Education.
LEADERSHIP Most importantly, I support good educational leadership in all schools. Administrators will be held accountable for the education of students just as teacher, and, we as parents, are accountable. Fair and creative administration will be sought. It is our desire to have students who do their best and behave well in the classroom.
ATTENDANCE I believe that student attendance is most important in relation to achievement in the classroom. Teachers will not be held accountable for students who do not attend classes,
6 parents will be expected to do their part to encourage good attendance.
BEHAVIOR AND ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS Students who misbehave, or interfere with the learning of other students, will be placed in alternative settings until they are taught to behave in the classroom.
HOME SCHOOLS Some people are able to home school their children well. This is a difficult task. People who home school their children will be monitored by frequent checks of content testing for each child. Students who are home schooled will be expected to spend the same amount of time in study as students who are in the public schools.
REMEDIATION Due to the fact that we all learn some things better than others, student's weaknesses will be regularly assessed with an opportunity being given to improve.
HOMEWORK Homework is often necessary just as an aid to let the parent know what their children are studying. However, busy work, or material which has not been understood by the student, will not be sent home in the form of homework. Homework should be a pleasant experience for the family. Furthermore, I believe that family time is very important, and excessive homework will not be tolerated. I view the role of the family as being one to nurture the child.
7 The teaching of children in academic programs will be left to the hands of professional teachers.
TEACHERS Teaching is one of the most important professions. Our teachers must be paid enough to compete with salaries on the national average. In turn, we expect of teachers, especially teachers beyond fifth grade, to have certification in the content area in which they teach. Teachers will be expected to be professional, which includes continuous content study as well as the best way to present information to our children. I expect teachers to
